To Facebook or not!

IS it time to give up your Facebook profile? It is a hot topic on the Internet at the moment and there is even a movement and a day when we should all disable our profiles. Yes, it is true, most tech-savvy Internet users are giving up their Facebook profiles. This all started when Facebook started to change their privacy policies on a regular basis. Each time these changes have just been applied and never are you, the user, asked if you would like these changes to be made on your profile. If you have never changed the settings on your profile you should realise that all your information is now very public and is not limited to your friends as it was originally on Facebook.

All your updates are public and if you do not go and change your settings immediately anybody can gain access to all your posts, updates and personal information. The move online is for everybody to disable their profiles on 31 May. The funny thing is that each minute so many people join Facebook that even if 100 000 people were to leave during that day, the number of users on Facebook will still increase.

Here are some tips. Go and double check your privacy settings on Facebook, don’t assume that you are safe. Think before you post an update, will future employers also find your statements funny or could it cost you that perfect job? And most of all do not put your address or contact info on your profile. Yes, it is great for friends to phone or visit you, but if the whole world can get access to this information it could cause problems.

Kry so meer spoed! – www.downstorm.co.za – Bloemnuus – 21 Mei 2010

EK is so gelukkig om onbeperkte bandwydte by my huis te hê.

Give TopTV a fair chance – BloemNews 14 May 2010

TopTV has finally launched and the age of competition is here, but the question now is when will the installation of my new decoder finally take place.

I love new services and new gadgets. I love being the first one to try new things and I love being able to tell people all about it. I do however hate being at the forefront and having to be part of the teething problems of new services.

After phoning and leaving a message at the TopTV call centre I am still awaiting my promised call back from them. To be honest they do still have about 24 hours left.

I decided to take things into my own hands and I quickly looked up a well know electronics company in Bloemfontein. They are well know for dish installations but as I was told they were not accredited to install the TopTV system. I was quickly told that the fee they receive for the installation of these systems are to low. Then followed a rant all about how low the quality of the programming is. I had to endure a few minutes of TopTV bashing before I was able to cut the call short.

In all fairness I believe that this new service and also the others that will follow in the next few months do need to be given a chance. A fair chance, please do not let disgruntled installers stop you from joining this new service. At such a low price we are not only paying for a new provider, but we are paying for the possibility of choice in our lives. If other services see that there is a huge uptake of this service they are sure to also invest in bringing more choice to South Africa.
